portfolio dead, reports the Awl.
Portfolio’s Jeff Bercovici mnookins the obit, minus references to sex in 1969. Having arranged the initial focus groups for this launch, I am sad. Portfolio took its share of sniping, much of it deserved, but I will still believe there is a business audience, not being served by the “Big Three” (Fortune-Forbes-Business Week), available for a different kind of magazine. I do not know why they closed it without ever trying a different editor. I was happy to write for their website — the second publication site I wrote for last year to close, along with Radar — and hope they keep the archives up.
My work for Portfolio.com:
Mark Penn’s Missed Microtrends: How Hillary Clinton’s strategist failed to follow his own advice, and has nearly sunk his own candidate. April 7, 2008
Election 2008: The Air War: How good ads helped Hillary Clinton get the upper hand in Pennsylvania despite being heavily outspent. April 25, 2008
Campaign Ad War: Clinton’s team knows what TV ads are for, and it uses them well. Obama’s commercials preach to the converted. May 6, 2008
(In case you’re wondering, I stand behind the critique of Obama’s primary campaign ads. Although he ran a better race than Hillary in many respects, especially of course online and in mobilizing ground troups, and mastering the caucus process, her ads at that point were much better and played a big role in her near-comeback during the second half of the primary season.)
RIP Conde Nast Portfolio!
