New Riders Of The Purple Sage, “Sing Me A Rainbow.” John “Marmaduke” Dawson, the NRPS lead singer whose voice was etched into my teenage years with songs like this, died last week. The New Riders were a “psychedelic cowboy band,” a Grateful Dead offshoot co-founded by Dawson and Jerry Garcia, who formed it so he could practice his pedal steel guitar.
