Yo dawg. I heard you like religious intrusion in government affairs, so I put some religious intrusion in our health care bill so you can intrude on women’s right to choose while you provide health care to the needy.

Ted Kennedy earlier this year, to illustrate their story today on how the Catholic Church helped get anti-abortion provisions into the House’s healthcare bill.

Very conspiratorial, no? Even if the photo doesn’t really have anything to do with the events of Saturday evening. (I personally thought this little meeting happened yesterday before I read the full caption on the click-through.)

i would say that in my everyday life, i’m a pretty big twitter defender.

every once in a while, someone comes along and says “oh man, haha twitter. what, so you just go around typing ‘i’m eating a sandwich! i’m in the bathroom now! i’m at work!’ all day long and pretend that people give a shit?

the short answer, i suppose, is yes. but really it’s about community and finding common threads of interest and making connections with people and it’s this really great thing that i believe has a lot of potential.

but then i look over at the trending topics and see things like “KEEP THE WAVE GOING” that i realize i’m totally wrong.

we’re a bunch of fucking idiot dullards shouting out into the empty nothingspace and no one cares and we’re all delusional.

On the other hand, I’m generally a Twitter basher, but this is a bad rap. I repeat for the xxth time: TRENDING TOPICS MEANS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING (if your goal is to find out what a lot of people are discussing). It simply refers to a rapid rate of increase in some topic that may have been previously microscopically tiny and is now merely very small. It is a measure of velocity. On occasion, that can be interesting, but in no way does it reflect a majority - or even a very large minority - of the activity on Twitter. If you see something stupid on Trending Topics, don’t assume it characterizes the user base.

Close to half of 50% of registered voters (65% of the state’s population) opposed the gay marriage amendment. You know what that adds up to in absolutes? SEVENTEEN PERCENT OF MAINE’S POPULATION.
FYI - The remainder of the state was either too apathetic to vote, doesn’t have voting rights… or is too consumed by whatever they do for a living to carry out their civic duties, as usual. Yes, turnout matters, and it matters BIG. And it matters less than whoever you work for or whatever other silly thing you might plan on election day, no matter what. Vote absentee if you must.

I agree about getting gay marriage off the ballot. But don’t go down this road. If you do, someone will point out that only 22% (or whatever) of people voted for Obama. You can’t assume the people who stayed home would have voted differently. Most research shows they usually vote the same as the ones who turn out. Yes, in a close election just a few votes would have tipped it. But the pro-gay-marriage side had tons of money and publicized it to the hilt. I’m sure they pulled out everyone they could. It just comes back to: these things shouldn’t be put to a vote.
